On Sunday, S&L U15s travelled South into Bedfordshire to take on Ampthill in the first round of the East Midlands Cup. With their senior team playing in the Championship and a large squad to choose from, a tough game was anticipated!
Ampthill started strongly, using their big centre to make ground, but for 13 minutes the S&L lads held firm. That was until a turnover at a ruck resulted in a converted score for Ampthill. That pattern continued for the rest of the half with the S&L defence holding strong when Ampthill had the ball, but conceding tries when turnovers occurred. 26-0 at half-time.
The team talk about improving ball retention worked as the second half was much better and the go forward we have been working on in training started to show. With 15 minutes left to play, the boys had pulled the score back to 38-17 through three tries from Ben and a conversion from Harvey. Unfortunately, the lads ran out of steam as the constant defending against a much bigger team took it's toll with three late scores resulting in a 57-17 win for Ampthill.
A great effort from the team and a result that does not fairly reflect the effort they put in.
Ampthill awarded player of the match to Sol and the S&L Coaches player of the match was Dylan for his tireless tackling.
